Before that next shopping spree, make a list and stick to it. Ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” Impulse buys often end up as clutter, so think about what you buy and the potential waste it could generate.

Choosing products with minimal packaging, or better yet, no packaging at all, can make a huge difference to the amount of waste heading to your local Auckland landfill. Invest in sturdy reusable bags so you can opt out of a bag at the checkout.
Join the refill revolution
Many shops now offer refills on everything from laundry detergent to dish soap. Bring your own containers and save money (and the planet) in the process. It can feel a lot easier to buy new than to repair, but fixing and upcycling items can be a great way to get stuck in and create something new! If you’ve got a hole in your jeans, try your hand at fixing them up, or find someone who can. You could even turn old furniture into a funky statement piece with a bit of DIY.
Make the switch
Single-use products, especially plastics, are the environment’s nemesis. Switching to reusable bags, bottles, cups, and containers can drastically reduce your waste footprint. Keep a set in your car or bag so you’re never caught off guard. It’s not just good for the planet; it often saves you money in the long run, too.

Know your numbers
Most plastics have a recycling number within a triangle somewhere on them, and that’ll tell you how to recycle it properly. You’re looking for numbers 1, 2, and 5—those are the ones you can safely chuck into your recycle bin and know you’re getting it right instead of just wish cycling.
Keep ‘em clean
In order for things to be recycled properly, they need to be clean. Yeah, we’re looking at you, we see that jar you threw into the recycle bin without rinsing it…Making sure all your recyclables are free from gunk and sticky stuff will ensure that your valuable recycling doesn’t just end up in the Auckland landfill instead.
Don’t overdo it
Generally, recycling bins that are overflowing won’t be collected, so don’t be an idiot about it.

Sort it out
When you do need to dispose of your (reduced) waste, make sure you sort it properly. Separate out your recyclable and non-recyclable items and put them in the appropriate bins. Choose your size

Know your no-no’s
Just because it fits in your skip bin doesn’t mean it should go in. Don’t go chucking hazardous waste in (we’ve got hazibags for that) and leave out the e-waste—look for e-waste drop-off points for your old laptops and cellphones.
